JULY

Give A Kid A Chance is a program designed to
start the school year out on the right foot for
children in need in Cherokee County.
Close to 40 organizations (churches, businesses,
ministries and civic groups) work together to
provide backpacks and school supplies for each
elementary, middle and high school student who
has been preregistered with Give a Kid a Chance.
The event will be held in two locations in 2010,
with details to come later.
Last year we served 2,500 and expect 3,500 to
4,000 in 2010! We've grown so much since
our beginning in 2006, when we helped 100
students and their families.
The services we offer our guests include vision,
hearing, dental and chiropractic screenings, and
haircuts. Each family can shop from a collection
of like-new clothing, and enjoy a fresh meal. All
events and supplies are provided at no charge for
the registered students and immediate
family. A voucher must be presented to
receive a backpack and school supplies.
Vaccinations will be available as well. If we are
successful in winning the grant, we want to give
each child a new pair of jeans and tennis shoes!
Here's how you can help! We need of donations of
new socks and underwear, adult and children's
sizes. Filled backpacks are needed, as well as
gently used, school appropriate clothing. We also
need volunteers, especially those who have
medical expertise and can help in the screening
rooms. See how you can be involved by
e-mailing Candi Hannigan at candihan@bellsouth.net.
